This site is a tribute to Gary Murphy, who was born in Cork City on March 22, 1959.
Gary was a beloved father, grandfather, husband, brother, teacher, traveller, footballer, blaggarder, and Cork rebel.
He lived no ordinary life - teaching in Sudan, Brunei, Hong Kong, Oman, and Qatar, scoring goals galore on many a football pitch, and bringing his family and friends along with him for the ride.
In memory of Gary, donations (if desired) could be made to Concern Worldwide at the following link. Concern's work reflects the spirit of Gary's time teaching children in Sudan in 1985-1989, and his many charitable endeavours since then. Most recently, he was proud of his work with Community College Qatar to partner and support a secondary school in the village of Makunduchi, Zanzibar. We are so grateful that donations in Gary's name have raised €1,040.00 for Concern Worldwide as of 22 March 2024.
We invite Gary's family, friends, students and colleagues to share their memories and pictures of him on this site via the links below.
His funeral service was held on 24 January at St Finbarr’s Church, Cork South. He was buried in St Finbarr’s Cemetery, where he now lies at rest with his father Jim, grandfather Cornelius, and grandmother Josephine.
Thinking of you all in the hard time, and sending love and hugs
RIP spuddy, condolences to all the family, he was so young. Remembered so well from our school days in The Monastery and The Abbey in Tipp.
